Application Cases
Case 1: Ceramic Body Reinforcing Agent
Challenge:
Unfired ceramic bodies (green bodies) have very low mechanical strength and are prone to breakage or chipping during processes such as transfer, trimming, and glazing, leading to low yield rates.
CMC Solution:
As a binder added to the body formulation, CMC’s long-chain molecules form flexible bridges between particles. After drying, it firmly binds the loose ceramic powders together, increasing the flexural strength of the green body by 2-3 times and significantly improving the yield rate during handling.
Case 2: Stabilizer and Rheological Modifier for Glaze Slurries
Challenge:
Glaze slurries are suspensions composed of various mineral raw materials with different densities. They are prone to sedimentation and agglomeration after prolonged standing, and their viscosity is unstable. This can result in uneven glaze layer thickness during spraying or dipping, leading to defects such as running glaze or pinholes.
CMC Solution:
As a suspending and thickening agent for glazes, CMC increases the viscosity and stability of the glaze slurry, ensuring uniform suspension of glaze particles. At the same time, it imparts favorable thixotropic properties to the glaze, allowing it to flow smoothly and evenly cover the body surface during application. Upon standing, the viscosity quickly recovers, preventing sagging and forming a uniform, smooth glaze layer.
Case 3: Plasticizing Lubricant for Extrusion Molding
Challenge:
In the production of extruded products such as honeycomb ceramics and ceramic tubes, poor plasticity and high friction of the raw material can lead to difficulties in extrusion, high energy consumption, and issues such as cracking and surface roughness in the final products.
CMC Solution:
CMC adsorbs onto the surface of ceramic particles, acting as a lubricant that significantly reduces the friction coefficient between particles and between the raw material and the mold wall. At the same time, its water-retention properties improve the plasticity of the material, resulting in a smoother extrusion process, a smoother product surface, and a denser structure.
Case 4: Ceramic Decal Printing Ink
Challenge:
Ceramic decal printing requires a binder that can carry pigments, provide suitable viscosity and drying speed, and burn off completely during firing.
CMC Solution:
Due to its excellent film-forming ability, strong adhesion, and clean-burning properties, CMC is used as the primary binder in ceramic printing inks (also known as “printing oil”). It effectively adheres the pigments to the transfer paper. After being transferred to the ceramic body, it decompletely decomposes during firing, leaving behind only the vibrant design.
